Bali offers a million decent sights to visit, not only the beaches, but also rich in cultural festivals, customs and heritage of antiquity. As with most other island, Bali also has a remote village that still maintain the authenticity of the culture and customs of their ancestors, namely Tenganan Pegringsingan VillageTenganan Pegringsingan is a village located in Karangasem regency, Bali province, Indonesia. Before the 1970s the village is known by the anthropologists as one of most remote society’s archipelago, but it rapid have changes occurred in the village such as the development of local communication by the central government, and opening up to the tourism world. One interesting factor of this village is the unique culture of Bali Aga ( The original Balinese ) who still holds the original tradition, ceremony ( wedding ceremonies, births and deaths ) and the rules of ancient Bali, the village layout and has a unique architecture, the other famous thing from this village are selunding Gamelan music and grimace double ikat textiles. It is said that in the past the people of Tenganan Pegringsingan chosen by Lord Indra to manage the region contained, according to His divine plan to be a microcosm of the world. They were instructed to use all means to remain pure and clean. Territorial concept, body and spiritual purity and integrity was very important in this village.

The houses building in Tenganan Pegringsingan village was built on the two sides north to south with open door. The entrance of the house is relatively narrow and can only be entered or left by one person at a time. You can enter this village through the gate located at the south end. On either side of the entrance gate there are two small temples. There is Bale Agung Pajang, where the administrative decisions are made for the village. Next is a drum tower ( kul – kul ), commonly kul – kul will be hit 21 times every morning as a sign to start the activities in the day. Tenganan village center is a series of communal pavilion (Bale) that was used for ceremonial meeting. In this village there are strict rules for who is allowed to settle in the village, which is only for those born in the village and became a full member of society. As for who is married to the people from outside the village will be kicked out or leave the village.

How to Get There

If you want to visit Tenganan village, you can drive via Jl. By Pass Ngurah Rai, by using car or motorcycle, which has about 65.2 km in distance and will take about 1 h 11 minute in journey.
